SUPPORT AFTER BIRTH: infant feeding

Breast Pump Flange Fitting

Many mothers experience pain or discomfort when expressing, but using a breast pump really shouldn’t hurt.

So many women are handed a pump, given standard flange sizes and left to figure the rest out for themselves. Most breast pumps come with a very limited range of flange sizes, despite the fact that nipples come in all shapes and sizes. It’s a bit like expecting everyone
to wear the same size shoes and wondering why some people are very uncomfortable!

If pumping feels uncomfortable, painful, inefficient or just harder work than it should be, the flange size will likely be part of the problem. A good flange fit can make a huge difference to your comfort, milk removal and your overall pumping experience.

During a flange fitting appointment, I’ll assess your nipple size and shape, talk through your current pumping setup and help you find the flange size and style that works best for you.

We’ll also look at positioning, pump settings and any challenges you’re experiencing, so you leave feeling more confident about pumping and feeding your baby. Whether you’re exclusively pumping, combination feeding, expressing for a baby in neonatal
care, returning to work, building a freezer stash, or simply wanting pumping to feel a bit easier, you’re welcome to book a flange fitting consultation.

Appointments include:

  • Nipple measurement and flange assessment
  • Review of your current pump and accessories
  • Troubleshooting pain, discomfort or low output
  • Recommendations for alternative flange sizes or inserts where appropriate
  • Practical pumping tips tailored to you
  • Written follow-up recommendations

Who is this for?

  • Pumping hurts
  • Your nipples rub, swell or become damaged during pumping
  • You’re struggling to express as much milk as expected
  • Pumping sessions feel long or ineffective
  • You’ve never checked whether your flange size is actually right for you
  • You’re about to start pumping and want to get off to the best possible start

Pumping doesn’t have to be something you just put up with. Sometimes a small adjustment can make a surprisingly big difference.
